Chesto Ruck

On the afternoon of April 1st, 2024, Dorney Marie Chesto Ruck died in Douglas, Isle of Man, after living with cancer for a decade. She passed peacefully and painlessly, in the excellent care of Hospice Isle of Man and surrounded by family.

Dorney was born in Anchorage, Alaska, to her parents Carol Chesto (nee Ward) and Lawrence “Larry” Chesto. She spent her childhood across several states and countries, growing up in a military family. After graduating from Waynesboro Area Senior High School, she attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she studied English with minors in pre-law and history. She spent the majority of her career in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas, working across many nonprofit and corporate industries in jobs that can best be connected by their people-focused and innovation-minded qualities. Her final career path was working as an Radiology Technologist.

Dorney was an avid reader, with a special place in her heart for mystery thrillers and romance novels. She was also a passionate host, advocate for others, and crafter. She volunteered with the Women’s Institute at the Isle of Man, helping to teach technological literacy skills to older residents of the Isle, and spent many summers volunteering at Camp Ilchester, with her camp name “Parker.” Dorney was a valued member in all of her communities, and was known for volunteering not for the “glamorous” tasks, but rather the ones she knew would get ignored otherwise.

Dorney is preceded in death by her parents, Carol and Larry. She is survived by her husband, Eric Ruck, her children Asher, Caleb, and Maxillimian, her sisters, Moira and Shawna, and her niece, Olivia. She is also followed by the many friends of her children to whom she provided driving lessons, lectures, and Kraft Mac & Cheese, and who always had a place in her home and heart.

As per her wishes, there will be no traditional viewing or funeral. A celebration of life will take place in Maryland, but please give the family time to arrange and share these details. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice Isle of Man or donating a home-cooked meal to a shelter to celebrate her hospitable spirit.
