Stella

20th November 1935 – 8th February 2026 Founder of Jurby Junk, Artist, Poet, and Author. The Isle of Man has lost one of its most endearing characters. Stella dedicated  much of her life to the Island and its people that she held so dear. Stella and her famous shop, ‘Jurby Junk’, appeared on many national television  programmes. People would travel from all over the world to visit her unique shop— maybe to buy something, or just to browse and chat with Stella. She would always  welcome customers seven days a week, wearing her black leather dress (of which  she had seven identical ones for each day of the week, but who knew that!). She  would take great pleasure in seeing the shock new customers would experience  walking into her Kingdom for the first time. Always happy to serve, she seemed to know where every item in the shop could  be found. A visit to ‘Jurby Junk’ and Stella was a day out and a tourist attraction  for the north of the island for many years. Stella would delight in the fact that when  young children visited her, they would return years later with their own families. If a  customer found an item for a pound and discovered they had a rare, priceless item  (and this did happen), Stella would be genuinely delighted for them. Stella would supply props to many of the films made on the island, free of charge,  on the condition that she could appear in a small cameo somewhere in them. I was  a struggling actor, and my mother was getting more work than me. Where did I go  wrong? My wife Grazina and I even managed to get her to come to Las Vegas—her first  and only trip to America—for the wedding of her grandson Daniel and his lovely  wife Nicki, but only when she found someone able to keep the shop open in her  absence. That was Stella… A truly remarkable woman with a truly unique business strategy: “Everything I  make, I put back into the shop for my customers.” That was Stella… I remember our time when I was a young boy and we were living in London; Stella  was working for the government at the Central Office of Information. She ran her  own department, which for a single mum in the '60s and '70s was very unusual.  Working very long hours, she would come home exhausted, and I couldn’t talk to  her for half an hour until she’d finished the cup of tea I’d made her. As a child, I  was convinced she worked for James Bond and that he was working her way too  hard. That was Stella… Stella will be remembered by her friends and family with the fondest love and  affection for her sense of fun, hard work, dedication and stoic approach to  whatever task lay before her. An inspiration, an icon, a hero. That was Stella… my mum. Stella will be reunited with her father (Howard Pixton, Pioneer Aviator) at the Jurby  Church cemetery.

Cowie

Our beloved mother, sister, wife and friend, Samantha Britt Cowie from Ramsey passed away on 7th January 2026 at Nobles Hospital at the age of 52. Despite health issues over the last couple of years Sam still managed to enjoy her life, never complaining, looking after everyone else and making the very best of everything with immense bravery.

A Senior Healthcare Assistant at Ramsey Group Practice, Sam spent her whole life working to help others, from her first job as a manager in Iceland, through a long career at Boots, culminating in being one of the first registered Pharmacy technicians in Britain. Despite being a mature student and a full time working mother, she was determined to obtain her technician qualifications and so proud to complete her studies with distinction and be awarded her registration. She moved to the Island in 2005 and loved living in Ramsey.  She moved from her pharmacy career to Ramsey Group Practice as a healthcare assistant, continued her training to learn many specialist skills and enjoyed her role immensely. She loved her colleagues, customers and patients and always did her best to help them and brighten their day.

She was kind, thoughtful, bright, funny, smart, always busy and most of all, cared about everyone she met and her warmth, laughter, and love filled our lives with joy.

Sam was happiest birdwatching in her garden, sharing laughter over a wine or two,  spending time by the sea she loved, walking round the Island she loved, shopping, cooking, baking wonderful cakes or working on her crafts.

She leaves behind a loving husband, Andy, daughter Charis and sons Cameron and George. She was immensely proud of her children and did everything she could to help them.

Always smiling, her patience and humour shaped us into who we are today. We’re grateful for every memory and moment shared.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life to take place on Saturday 24th January at 12.00 at St. Paul’s church in Ramsey, followed by a private burial at Maughold church. Sam requested people to dress formally with colourful accessories, although she would have just been happy for you to come as you are. Sam’s family and friends would be very grateful if you could join them at the Park Hotel afterwards to share all our happy memories of Sam. Family flowers only thank you and any donations you might wish to make could be sent to ‘Mannin Cancer’ or the ‘Isle of Man Hospice’. ℅ Corkhill and Callow.  A beautiful person, inside and out, who will be sadly missed.   Further enquiries to Corkhill & Callow, 7 Dale Street, Ramsey.
